Thermoplastics consist of long polymer chains held together mainly by weak intermolecular forces, with little or no cross-linking. On heating, these weak forces are overcome, so thermoplastics soften and can be remelted and remoulded repeatedly without changing their chemical structure.

Thermosetting plastics, in contrast, form permanent, rigid cross-links between chains when first moulded and cured, so they cannot be remelted or reshaped once set; heating them further only chars or decomposes them rather than softening them.
