Question

Which of the following statements explains the way biological magnification impacts organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain?

The correct answer is

Toxic substances become more concentrated as they move up the food chain.

Biological magnification (biomagnification) is the increase in the concentration of harmful, non-biodegradable chemicals such as DDT and mercury compounds at successive trophic levels of a food chain.

These chemicals enter the food chain through water and soil, are taken up by producers, and cannot be broken down or excreted easily, so they are stored in the fatty tissues of organisms.

Each consumer eats a large quantity of organisms from the level below and keeps the chemicals they contain. So the chemicals become more and more concentrated at each higher level, and top consumers, including humans, carry the highest amounts.

Energy is indeed lost as heat between levels, but this does not reduce the toxin concentration; the amount of toxin per organism increases rather than decreases, and these chemicals are harmful precisely because they do not break down.

Hence, Toxic substances become more concentrated as they move up the food chain.
