MH SET 2020 Paper 1 Question Paper (27-Dec-2020)
The correct answer is

Occurs in South Asian countries only

Honour killing is the murder of a family member, usually a woman, by her own relatives because she is believed to have brought dishonour to the family or community, typically by choosing her own partner, marrying across caste, gotra or religion, or resisting an arranged match.

Different from dowry deaths – true. A dowry death is caused by the husband or in-laws over unmet dowry demands (Section 304B IPC), whereas an honour killing is usually carried out by the woman’s natal family or caste panchayat to punish a breach of community norms.

Not recognized by law – true. Indian criminal law has no separate offence called honour killing; such cases are prosecuted under the general provisions for murder. The Law Commission (242nd Report, 2012) proposed a special law, and the Supreme Court in Shakti Vahini v. Union of India (2018) issued guidelines against khap interference, but no specific statute was enacted.

Mostly directed against women – true. The UNFPA has estimated about 5,000 honour killings of women and girls a year worldwide; men are sometimes killed too, but women bear the brunt because family honour is tied to female sexuality.

Occurs in South Asian countries only – false. Honour killings are reported from the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Central Asia, and among migrant communities in Europe and North America, not only from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Hence, the answer is Occurs in South Asian countries only.
