Question

Which of the following statement is correct regarding force?

I. If an unbalanced force is applied on the object, there will be a change either in its speed or in the direction of its motion.

II. To accelerate the motion of an object, a balanced force is required.

The correct answer is

Only I

The question tests the effect of balanced versus unbalanced forces on the motion of a body.

A balanced force is one where the net (resultant) force on the object is zero, so all the forces cancel out.

An unbalanced force is one where the net force is non-zero; only such a force can produce acceleration.

Statement I says that an unbalanced force changes either the speed or the direction of motion. This is true, because a non-zero net force produces acceleration, which alters the magnitude or direction of velocity.

Statement II says a balanced force is required to accelerate an object. This is false, since a balanced force gives zero net force and therefore zero acceleration; an object under balanced forces stays at rest or moves with constant velocity.

To accelerate a body you actually need an unbalanced (net) force, as stated by Newton's second law, F = ma.

Hence only Statement I is correct.

Only I is correct.
