Which of the following scientists suggested that the symbols of elements can be formed from one or two letters of the element's name?
Berzelius
Berzelius.
The Swedish chemist Jons Jacob Berzelius proposed in 1813 that each element be represented by a short symbol taken from the first letter, or the first two letters, of its Latin or English name — H for hydrogen, Fe for iron (from ferrum), and so on. The scheme replaced the clumsy pictorial symbols that John Dalton had used earlier and is still followed today.
Dalton drew circular pictographs, not letter symbols. Lavoisier helped standardise element names but not letter-based symbols, and Democritus belonged to ancient Greek atomism and had no role in modern symbol notation.
