The correct answer is

Thick description

Clifford Geertz, the American interpretive anthropologist, set out his method in 'Thick Description: Toward an Interpretive Theory of Culture', the opening essay of 'The Interpretation of Cultures' (1973).

Borrowing the term from Gilbert Ryle (the wink versus the twitch), Geertz argued that ethnography must not merely record behaviour (thin description) but interpret the layers of meaning and context that make an action intelligible to the actors, as in his 'Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight'.

Participant observation is the general fieldwork technique of all ethnographers (Malinowski), while systematic observation and 'systematic description' belong to structured, quantitative observation; the method identified with Geertz is interpretive.

Hence, the answer is Thick description.
