Ethnography is the study of a people's way of life from within, through long-term fieldwork, participant observation and conversation (Malinowski, Geertz). It rests on the interpretive assumption that people are active meaning makers who interpret their world and act on those meanings.
The ethnographer's task is to capture and interpret these meanings — the 'native's point of view' (Malinowski) or 'thick description' (Geertz) — rather than impose outside categories.
'Objective study' describes positivist research. 'Research people' says nothing about method, and the researcher's proximity is a condition of fieldwork, not what ethnography is fundamentally premised on.
