Which of the following is not an absolute dating method ?
Stratigraphy
Stratigraphy option is correct.
Archaeological dating techniques are divided into two families. Absolute (chronometric) methods produce a numerical age in calendar years — radiocarbon, potassium-argon, thermoluminescence, dendrochronology, obsidian hydration, palaeomagnetic dating and uranium-series decay all belong here. Relative methods, by contrast, only order deposits or artefacts as earlier or later without yielding a year value.
Stratigraphy — the reading of superposed layers on the principle that lower strata are older than the strata sealing them — is the classic relative dating tool of field archaeology. It fixes a sequence but never a date, unless an independent absolute technique is applied to material from a given layer.
Dendrochronology (tree-ring counting) gives calendar years; the obsidian hydration method measures the thickness of the rind formed after a flake is struck and calibrates it against a known rate; palaeomagnetic dating uses shifts in the Earth’s magnetic field of known age. All three are therefore absolute.
