Which meristem is located at the base of certain plants and helps them regenerate after cutting?
Intercalary Meristem
Meristems are regions of actively dividing cells in plants. They are classified by position into apical, lateral and intercalary meristems.
The intercalary meristem lies at the base of leaves or at the base of internodes (just above the nodes), especially in grasses and other monocots. When the upper part of a grass blade is cut or grazed, cell division at this basal meristem pushes the leaf up again, so the plant regrows. This is why lawns can be mown repeatedly.
The apical meristem is at the tips of roots and shoots and increases length; the lateral meristem (vascular cambium and cork cambium) lies along the sides of stems and roots and increases girth. "Girth meristem" is not a standard type – the growth in girth is the job of the lateral meristem, which is not at the base.
Hence, the answer is intercalary meristem.
