Why the name. British officials thought the rolling grassy uplands of the Khasi hills, the cool damp climate, the mist and the pine woods resembled the Scottish Highlands, and Shillong was developed as a hill station on that model. The name has stuck to Shillong and to the state as a whole.

Why the rainfall is so extreme. The Khasi hills face south towards the Bay of Bengal across the flat plains of Bangladesh.
