Which is the Scotland of North-East India ?
Meghalaya
Meghalaya is called the Scotland of the East — option 4.
Why the name. British officials thought the rolling grassy uplands of the Khasi hills, the cool damp climate, the mist and the pine woods resembled the Scottish Highlands, and Shillong was developed as a hill station on that model. The name has stuck to Shillong and to the state as a whole.
| Fact about Meghalaya | Detail |
|---|---|
| Name | Sanskrit for “the abode of clouds” |
| Formed | Full statehood on 21 January 1972, carved out of Assam |
| Capital | Shillong, the “Scotland of the East” |
| Hills | Garo, Khasi and Jaintia — a detached block of the peninsular plateau, not part of the Himalaya |
| Rainfall | Mawsynram and Cherrapunji (Sohra) record among the highest rainfall on Earth |
| Society | Matrilineal — descent and property pass through the mother among the Khasi, Garo and Jaintia |
Why the rainfall is so extreme. The Khasi hills face south towards the Bay of Bengal across the flat plains of Bangladesh. The monsoon current sweeps up that plain and is forced abruptly upward by a wall of hills funnelled into a bowl at Cherrapunji, so the whole moisture load is wrung out in a short distance — the classic orographic effect.
Other Indian nicknames of the same family : Kashmir the Switzerland of India; Kerala God’s Own Country; Kodaikanal the Princess of Hill Stations; Jharkhand the Land of Forests; Kerala’s Alleppey the Venice of the East; and the Nilgiris the Blue Mountains.
The other options : Arunachal Pradesh is the Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains, Assam the Land of Red Rivers and Blue Hills, and Nagaland the Land of Festivals or the Switzerland of the East in some usages — but the settled answer here is Meghalaya.
Hence, the answer is Meghalaya.
