BPSC 70th 2024 Prelims General Studies Question Paper (13-Dec-2024)
The correct answer is

1 2 3 4

The order from east to west is Garo Hills, Nanda Devi, Kamet, K2 — that is, 1 2 3 4, option 4.

Place each feature on the map.

OrderFeatureWhere it liesApproximate longitude
1Garo HillsWestern Meghalaya, part of the Meghalaya plateau in the north-eastAbout 90° E — the easternmost
2Nanda DeviChamoli district, Uttarakhand; 7,816 mAbout 80° E
3KametAlso in Chamoli, but further north-west near the Tibet border; 7,756 mAbout 79·6° E
4K2Karakoram range, in the Gilgit-Baltistan area claimed by India; 8,611 mAbout 76·5° E — the westernmost

How to reason it out without remembering longitudes. Start from the two extremes, which are easy. The Garo Hills are in the north-east, so they must be first in an east-to-west list; K2 is in the Karakoram of the far north-west, so it must be last. That alone leaves only option 4, since options 1, 2 and 3 all begin or end incorrectly. The only real work is separating Nanda Devi from Kamet, and there the rule is that Kamet lies to the north-west of Nanda Devi, closer to the Tibetan border.

A few facts worth carrying. Nanda Devi is the highest peak lying entirely within India and gives its name to a national park and biosphere reserve that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kamet is the second highest in Uttarakhand. K2, also called Godwin-Austen, is the second highest mountain in the world after Everest. The Garo Hills, with the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, form the Meghalaya plateau, which is geologically a detached block of the peninsular shield rather than part of the Himalaya at all.

Hence, the answer is 1 2 3 4.
