Question

Tropic of Cancer is passes through which State ?

This question was previously asked in
BPSC 70th 2024 Prelims General Studies Re-Exam Question Paper (04-Jan-2025)
The correct answer is

Bihar

This question was deleted by BPSC in the final answer key for Set J, and the reason is plain: the Tropic of Cancer passes through none of the four states offered. The answer recorded here is Bihar, option 1, on the reasoning set out below, but the question as printed has no correct choice.

The eight states the Tropic actually crosses, from west to east :

No.State
1Gujarat
2Rajasthan
3Madhya Pradesh
4Chhattisgarh
5Jharkhand
6West Bengal
7Tripura
8Mizoram

Why each option fails. The Tropic of Cancer lies at about 23½° N. Bihar extends roughly from 24·3° to 27·5° N, so the whole state lies north of it. Odisha extends from about 17·8° to 22·6° N, entirely south of it. Uttar Pradesh begins at about 23·9° N, just north of the line. Meghalaya lies between about 25° and 26° N, again to the north.

Why Bihar is nevertheless the answer recorded. The Tropic does cross Jharkhand, which was part of Bihar until the state was divided in November 2000. A question framed from an older source, or from a memory of undivided Bihar, would give Bihar — and of the four options it is the only one with any such connection. That ambiguity is presumably what led the Commission to drop the question.

Worth remembering. The mnemonic for the eight states is Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Mizoram. Note that the Tropic passes through Mizoram but not through Manipur, and through West Bengal but not through Bihar or Odisha.

Hence, the answer recorded is Bihar, with the caveat that BPSC deleted the question.
