The correct answer is

Transistor Saturation Region Identification

The operating region of a transistor is determined by its biasing conditions. We need to identify the region based on the given parameters:

  • Base current ($I_B$) is greater than zero ($I_B > 0$).
  • Collector-to-emitter voltage ($V_{CE}$) is less than 0.2 V ($V_{CE} < 0.2$ V).

Understanding Transistor Regions

The four main operating regions for a bipolar junction transistor (BJT) are:

  • Cut-off: Both junctions are reverse-biased. Essentially, the transistor is 'OFF'. ($I_B \approx 0$).
  • Active: The base-emitter junction is forward-biased, and the base-collector junction is reverse-biased. The transistor acts as an amplifier. ($I_B > 0$, $V_{CE}$ is large enough).
  • Saturation: Both junctions are forward-biased. The transistor is fully 'ON' and conducts maximum possible current. $V_{CE}$ is very small.
  • Breakdown: Occurs under excessive voltage or current, potentially damaging the device.

Applying Conditions to Saturation

The condition $I_B > 0$ means the transistor is turned 'ON' (not in cut-off). The condition $V_{CE} < 0.2$ V signifies that the voltage across the collector and emitter is very low. This small voltage drop occurs when the transistor is allowing maximum current flow, which is characteristic of the saturation region. In this state, increasing the base current further does not significantly increase the collector current, and $V_{CE}$ is minimized (often around 0.2 V for silicon transistors).

Therefore, a transistor biased with $I_B > 0$ and $V_{CE} < 0.2$ V is operating in the saturation region.
