The correct answer is
They contract and move away from the cell wall

Plant Cell Osmosis: Water Loss Effects

Osmosis describes the net movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane, driven by differences in water potential.

When a living plant cell encounters an environment with a lower water potential (e.g., a hypertonic solution), water tends to move out of the cell.

Consequences of Water Loss in Plant Cells

  • Water exits the cell's vacuole and cytoplasm through the cell membrane.
  • This loss of water causes the volume of the protoplast (the cell membrane and its contents) to decrease.
  • The protoplast begins to shrink and pull away from the rigid cell wall. This phenomenon is specifically termed plasmolysis.

Consequently, the cell contents contract and detach from the cell wall.

This outcome aligns with option 4.
