What is the primary cause of convectional rainfall?

This question was previously asked in
SSC CGL 2025 Tier 2 Paper 1 Question Paper (19-Jan-2026)
The correct answer is

Heating of air that rises and cools

There are three main types of rainfall:

Convectional rainfall — caused by intense surface heating. Warm, moist air rises rapidly, expands, cools and condenses into cumulus clouds, producing short heavy showers with thunder. Common in equatorial regions and on hot summer afternoons.

Orographic rainfall — moist air is forced to rise over a mountain barrier (option B describes this).

Cyclonic/frontal rainfall — warm and cold air masses meet at a front (option A describes this).

Hence the answer is Heating of air that rises and cools.
