Absorb heat from the processor

A processor dissipates significant power as heat while switching, and excessive junction temperature degrades performance and can permanently damage the chip.

A heat sink is a finned metal block (usually aluminium or copper) mounted on the processor; its large surface area conducts heat away from the chip and dissipates it into the surrounding air.

So the heat sink's job is thermal, not logical: it does not store BIOS data, run the BIOS, or supply power to RAM.
