Although the retina captures two-dimensional images, the brain constructs a vivid three-dimensional representation of the world using depth cues. These cues are of two types: binocular (requiring both eyes) and monocular (available to a single eye).

Binocular cues are especially effective for judging nearby objects.

Retinal disparity: Since the eyes are about 2.5 inches apart, each receives a slightly different image. The brain compares these images, and the greater the disparity, the closer the object, forming the basis of stereoscopic vision.

Convergence: When focusing on a near object, the eyes turn inward. The degree of inward movement provides a cue to distance—the more convergence, the nearer the object.

Monocular cues are critical for perceiving depth at longer distances and in two-dimensional representations.

Interposition: An object blocking another is perceived as closer.

Relative size: Given equal-sized objects, the smaller retinal image is judged farther away.

Linear perspective: Parallel lines appear to converge with distance, signaling depth.

Texture gradient: Patterns appear denser as they recede, suggesting distance.

Relative height: Objects positioned higher in the visual field, particularly on a ground plane, are seen as farther away.

Motion parallax: During movement, nearby objects seem to shift rapidly in the opposite direction, while distant objects move slowly in the same direction.

By seamlessly integrating these cues, the brain reconstructs depth, allowing accurate navigation, object interaction, and spatial orientation. This unconscious synthesis transforms flat retinal images into a coherent 3D perceptual world.
