Cucurbitaceae (Gourd Family)
Diagnostic Characters: Mostly herbaceous climbing plants, often with tendrils. Leaves alternate, exstipulate, typically palmately lobed or dissected. Flowers unisexual (monoecious/dioecious), actinomorphic, pentamerous, epigenous. Stamens often appear united, typically 3 or 5 modified. Ovary inferior, tricarpellary, syncarpous, unilocular with parietal placentation. Fruit is a pepo (fleshy berry with a hard rind). Seeds flattened, numerous.

Economic Importance (five members):

  1. Cucurbita pepo (Pumpkin): Edible fruits and seeds.
  2. Cucumis sativus (Cucumber): Fresh vegetable.
  3. Citrullus lanatus (Watermelon): Sweet, juicy fruit.
  4. Luffa acutangula (Ridge Gourd): Young fruits cooked, mature provide sponges.
  5. Momordica charantia (Bitter Gourd): Vegetable, medicinal uses.

Poaceae (Grass Family)
Diagnostic Characters: Predominantly herbaceous plants. Stems (culms) cylindrical, hollow or solid, with nodes and internodes. Leaves alternate, distichous; comprise a sheath, ligule, and linear blade with parallel venation. Flowers highly reduced, enclosed by palea and lemma, forming a floret. Florets arranged in spikelets, further grouped into panicles, racemes, or spikes. Perianth reduced to lodicules. Stamens usually 3, anthers versatile. Ovary superior, monocarpellary, unilocular, single ovule. Fruit is typically a caryopsis (grain).

Economic Importance (five members):

  1. Oryza sativa (Rice): Global staple food.
  2. Triticum aestivum (Wheat): Major cereal, for bread.
  3. Zea mays (Maize/Corn): Food, feed, industrial use.
  4. Saccharum officinarum (Sugarcane): Primary sugar source.
  5. Bambusa spp. (Bamboo): Construction, paper, edible shoots.
