Cell Elongation: Promotes cell growth, particularly in shoots, by loosening cell walls.
Apical Dominance: Inhibits the growth of lateral buds, allowing the main stem to grow preferentially.
Root Initiation: Promotes the formation of adventitious roots in cuttings.
Fruit Development: Involved in fruit set and growth.
Tropisms: Mediates phototropism (growth towards light) and gravitropism (growth in response to gravity) by causing differential cell elongation.
Mechanism of Action:
Auxin's primary mechanism involves influencing cell wall extensibility. Auxin binds to receptor proteins in the cell, triggering a signaling cascade that activates proton pumps (H+-ATPases) in the plasma membrane. These pumps extrude protons into the cell wall, lowering its pH. This acidic environment activates cell wall-loosening enzymes (e.g., expansins), which loosen the cellulose microfibril network. Simultaneously, auxin promotes the synthesis of new cell wall components. The loosened cell wall, coupled with increased turgor pressure from water uptake, allows the cell to expand and elongate. Auxin also influences gene expression, controlling the synthesis of proteins involved in growth and differentiation.
