Nuclear pore complex

It forms an aqueous channel that allows the free diffusion of small molecules (ions, metabolites) while controlling the facilitated transport of larger molecules like proteins (e.g., histones, polymerases) and RNA (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA). This selective transport is crucial for gene expression and maintaining nuclear homeostasis. Specific transport proteins, called importins and exportins, facilitate the passage of larger cargo molecules through the NPC, ensuring proper cellular function and regulation of genetic information.
