Vernalization

UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Vernalization is a crucial biological process in many plants, especially biennials and winter annuals, where exposure to a period of cold temperature is required to induce or accelerate flowering. This cold stimulus, typically ranging from 0-10°C, is generally perceived by the apical meristems of the plant. Without adequate vernalization, these plants either fail to flower or exhibit a significantly delayed flowering time. Biologically, vernalization ensures that flowering occurs during agriculturally favorable seasons, preventing premature blooming in autumn and ensuring successful seed production in spring or summer after winter dormancy. The process involves complex molecular changes, thought to include epigenetic modifications, that switch the plant from a vegetative to a reproductive state. While the exact mobile signal, termed florigen, is often involved, the cold perception specifically sets the stage for its action, essentially timing the plant's reproductive cycle to its environment.
