Question

Which of the following is correct regarding the total internal reflection at the interface between two different optical media?

This question was previously asked in
NDA 2 2026 GAT Question Paper (13-Sep-2026)
The correct answer is

The phenomenon of total internal reflection can occur only if light is passing from a medium of low refractive index to a medium of high refractive index.

Total Internal Reflection (TIR) occurs when light travels from an optically denser medium, having a higher refractive index, to an optically rarer medium, having a lower refractive index.

For total internal reflection to occur, the angle of incidence in the denser medium must be greater than the critical angle.

Therefore, the correct condition is that light must travel from a medium of high refractive index to a medium of low refractive index, with the angle of incidence greater than the critical angle.

Correct Answer: The phenomenon of total internal reflection can occur only if light is passing from a medium of low refractive index to a medium of high refractive index.
