Selective scattering of shorter wavelengths

Sunlight entering the atmosphere is scattered by gas molecules through Rayleigh scattering, which scatters shorter wavelengths such as blue and violet far more strongly than longer wavelengths like red and orange, roughly in proportion to the inverse fourth power of wavelength. Since human eyes are more sensitive to blue than violet, the sky appears predominantly blue.
