Question

The marked price of a cooker is same at four shops I, II, III and IV. Shop I allows two successive discounts of 78% and 25%, shop II allows successive discounts of 83% and 29%, shop III allows successive discounts of 33% and 81%, and shop IV allows successive discounts of 84%, 83%, and 82% on the marked price of the cooker. Which shop is selling the cooker at the lowest price?

The correct answer is

IV

For successive discounts, the fraction of the marked price actually paid equals the product of the remaining fractions after each discount.

Shop I: \((1-0.78)(1-0.25) = 0.22 \times 0.75 = 0.1650\) of MP.

Shop II: \((1-0.83)(1-0.29) = 0.17 \times 0.71 = 0.1207\) of MP.

Shop III: \((1-0.33)(1-0.81) = 0.67 \times 0.19 = 0.1273\) of MP.

Shop IV: \((1-0.84)(1-0.83)(1-0.82) = 0.16 \times 0.17 \times 0.18 \approx 0.0049\) of MP.

Shop IV charges the smallest fraction of the marked price, so it sells the cooker at the lowest price.
