Tanjore Paintings: Style & Characteristics

Tanjore paintings, also known as Thanjavur paintings, are a classical South Indian art form originating from the town of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu.

Key Features of Tanjore Paintings

• Embellishments: Known for the liberal use of pure gold foil (gilding) applied to create rich textures and patterns.
• Materials: Often incorporate precious or semi-precious stones, coloured glass pieces, beads, and sometimes even threads to add depth and dimension.
• Subject Matter: Primarily depict Hindu deities, mythological figures, and scenes from epics. Lord Krishna is a very common subject.
• Composition: Figures are typically depicted in a stylized, frontal, or profile view with distinct features, often set against a rich background.

These characteristics distinguish Tanjore paintings from other Indian art styles, particularly their opulent use of gold and gems.
