The revolt of 1857 was triggered by widespread resentment against British policies, immediately sparked by the issue of greased cartridges for the new Enfield rifles.

Sepoys of the Bengal Army stationed at Meerut mutinied on 10 May 1857, and this uprising is regarded as the starting point of the revolt, from where it spread to Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, and other regions.

Delhi, Kanpur, and Lucknow became major centres of the revolt only after it had already broken out at Meerut.
