I climbed into bed and rolled myself in my blankets, first extinguishing the light that burned steadily near the door. I lay still trying to get to sleep but my fear made that impossible and soon I sat up in bed peering into the darkness and occasionally glancing at the round window in the side of the ship which seemed like a plate suspended in the darkness. For an hour I must have sat like this, and then I was suddenly roused, by a drought of cold air. I jumped out of bed; not having allowed for the motion of the ship, I was instantly thrown violently across the room.

Ship Passage: Analyzing the Author's Reaction

This question asks to identify the specific reason why the author jumped out of bed, based on the provided passage describing an experience on a ship.

Passage Analysis

The passage details the author's inability to sleep due to fear while in bed on a ship. The relevant part of the text describing the event is:

"...For an hour I must have sat like this, and then I was suddenly roused, by a drought of cold air. I jumped out of bed; not having allowed for the motion of the ship, I was instantly thrown violently across the room."

This clearly states that the author was "suddenly roused, by a drought of cold air" immediately before jumping out of bed.

Evaluating the Options

Let's examine each option in relation to the passage:

  • Option 1: he heard a faint sound. The passage does not mention the author hearing any sound. The trigger for jumping out of bed was explicitly stated as cold air.
  • Option 2: he saw someone coming towards him. The passage describes the author peering into darkness and glancing at a window, but it does not mention seeing anyone approaching.
  • Option 3: a cold breeze blew past his face. This aligns directly with the passage stating the author was "suddenly roused, by a drought of cold air". A "drought of cold air" is synonymous with a cold breeze.
  • Option 4: he was pushed by someone. The passage indicates the author jumped out of bed first and *then* fell due to the ship's motion. There is no mention of anyone pushing the author.

Conclusion

The passage explicitly states that a "drought of cold air" caused the author to be roused and subsequently jump out of bed. Therefore, the most accurate reason among the options is that a cold breeze blew past his face.
