Question

Study the given information carefully and answer the question that follows.

In an interview at a college, eight people, including the Principal, are sitting in a square formation facing towards the centre. While four of them are seated at the corners, the remaining four are seated at the centre of each side of the square. Bahl is sitting diagonally opposite Nikon. Nikon is sitting to the immediate right of Eva. Pearson is an immediate neighbour of Eva. Pearson is diagonally opposite Charlie. Charlie is seated to the immediate left of the Principal. Philip is not sitting to the immediate right of Bahl. Only three people sit between Philip and Jakson.

Who sits second to the left of Eva?

RRB NTPC 2019 CBT 1 Question Paper (8-Mar-2021) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is
Jakson

Puzzle Setup

Eight individuals are arranged in a square formation facing inward. Four occupy the corners, and four occupy the center of each side.

Key Deductions

  • Eva's Neighbors: Nikon is to Eva's immediate right, and Pearson is Eva's other immediate neighbor. This establishes a clockwise sequence: Pearson - Eva - Nikon.
  • Diagonal Relationships: Bahl is diagonally opposite Nikon. Pearson is diagonally opposite Charlie.
  • Initial Placement: Assume Pearson is at the Top-Left corner. Following the P-E-N sequence, Eva is at the Top-Middle side, and Nikon is at the Top-Right corner.
  • Placing Bahl and Charlie: Nikon (Top-Right corner) has Bahl diagonally opposite, placing Bahl at the Bottom-Left corner. Pearson (Top-Left corner) has Charlie diagonally opposite, placing Charlie at the Bottom-Right corner.
  • Placing the Principal: Charlie is to the immediate left of the Principal. Since Charlie is at the Bottom-Right corner, the Principal must be at the Bottom-Middle side.
  • Final Positions: The remaining seats are Middle-Right and Middle-Left. The remaining people are Philip and Jakson.
  • Constraint Verification: The clue "Philip is not sitting to the immediate right of Bahl" is satisfied because the seat to Bahl's right (Bottom-Middle) is occupied by the Principal. The clue "Only three people sit between Philip and Jakson" helps resolve their positions. With Philip at Middle-Right and Jakson at Middle-Left, there are exactly three people (Charlie, Principal, Bahl) between them in either direction (clockwise or counter-clockwise).

Final Seating Arrangement (Clockwise from Top-Left)

  • Top-Left Corner: Pearson
  • Top-Middle Side: Eva
  • Top-Right Corner: Nikon
  • Middle-Right Side: Philip
  • Bottom-Right Corner: Charlie
  • Bottom-Middle Side: Principal
  • Bottom-Left Corner: Bahl
  • Middle-Left Side: Jakson

Answering the Question

Eva is located at the Top-Middle side position.

Identifying the person second to the left (counter-clockwise) of Eva requires moving two positions counter-clockwise from Eva's seat.

The first position to Eva's left is Pearson (Top-Left corner). The second position to Eva's left is the Middle-Left side.

Based on the deduced seating arrangement, Jakson occupies the Middle-Left side.
