South Coast Railway (SCoR) with its headquarters at Visakhapatnam became operational from June 1, 2026 as the 18th zone of Indian Railways.
The new zone was carved primarily out of the East Coast Railway and covers the Waltair, Vijayawada and Guntur/Guntakal divisions, giving Andhra Pradesh a dedicated zonal setup for the first time.
Its creation was first announced in February 2019 to improve administrative focus, project execution and passenger services along India's south-eastern coastline.
Zonal chronology: after the earlier reorganisations that created 17 zones including East Coast, South Western, West Central, North Western, East Central and South East Central, SCoR is the next one, making it the 18th zone.
Hence, South Coast Railway is India's 18th railway zone.
