Solid CO₂ (also called dry ice) directly converts into gas without turning into liquid when the pressure is reduced to 1 atmosphere. This process is called sublimation, which occurs because the triple point of CO₂ is 5.11 atm, meaning liquid CO₂ cannot exist below this pressure. At 1 atmosphere, solid CO₂ skips the liquid phase and changes directly into carbon dioxide gas. This property makes dry ice useful in cooling and preservation, as it leaves no liquid residue. Therefore, when pressure drops to 1 atmosphere, solid CO₂ sublimates without coming to the liquid state.
