In humans, females carry two X chromosomes (XX) while males carry one X and one Y chromosome (XY), so all eggs produced by the mother carry a single X chromosome. During spermatogenesis, the father produces sperm carrying either an X or a Y chromosome in roughly equal numbers, and it is which type of sperm fertilises the egg that decides the child's sex, an XY combination giving a male and an XX combination giving a female. The mother's chromosome contribution is therefore constant, making the father's sperm the deciding factor.
