Question

Seven boxes, P, Q, S, T, U, V, and W, are kept one over the other, but not necessarily in the same order. There are exactly two boxes between T and P. Only Q is kept above U. No box is kept below P. S is kept somewhere below W but above V. Based on the given information, which box is kept third above V?

The correct answer is

W

Number the positions from top (1) to bottom (7). “Only Q is kept above U” means Q is at the top and U is directly below it, so Q is position 1 and U is position 2.

“No box is kept below P” puts P at the bottom, position 7.

There are exactly two boxes between T and P (position 7). Counting up, positions 5 and 6 lie between, so T sits at position 4.

The remaining boxes S, V and W fill positions 3, 5 and 6. The clue “S below W but above V” needs W above S above V, giving W at 3, S at 5 and V at 6.

The final stack top to bottom is Q, U, W, T, S, V, P. V is at position 6, so the third box above V is at position 3, which is W.

Hence, the answer is W.
