The correct answer is

The student said that he had been reading that book for a month, but he still did not understand the last chapter, which was the most crucial part.

The task is to convert the direct-speech sentence into correct indirect (reported) speech.

In reported speech the reporting verb "said" is in the past, so the tenses inside the quotation must shift back one step.

The present perfect continuous "have been reading" changes to the past perfect continuous "had been reading".

The present simple "do not understand" changes to the past simple "did not understand", and "is" changes to "was".

The pronoun "I" becomes "he", and the near demonstrative "this book" becomes the distant "that book".

Applying all these shifts consistently gives: "...he had been reading that book for a month, but he still did not understand the last chapter, which was the most crucial part."

The other options fail to back-shift one or more of these elements (keeping "this", "does", or "is").

Hence the correct answer is The student said that he had been reading that book for a month, but he still did not understand the last chapter, which was the most crucial part.
