Question

Refining of petroleum is carried out using which one of the following techniques?

This question was previously asked in
NDA I 2022 GAT Previous Year Paper (10-Apr-2022)
The correct answer is Fractional distillation

The correct option is Option 2: Fractional distillation.

How Petroleum Refining Works

Petroleum (crude oil) is a complex mixture of various hydrocarbons. Because these different components have different boiling points, they can be separated efficiently using fractional distillation.

The Process: Crude oil is heated to a high temperature (around 400°C) and introduced into a tall fractionating column.

Separation by Boiling Points: As the vapor rises up the column, it cools down. Hydrocarbons with higher boiling points condense back into liquids lower down in the column, while those with lower boiling points rise higher before condensing.

Products Obtained: This process separates crude oil into useful fractions such as refinery gas, gasoline (petrol), diesel, kerosene, fuel oil, and bitumen.
