Refer to the following letter, number, symbol series and answer the question. Counting to be done from left to right only. (All numbers are single-digit numbers only.)

(Left) S R E S 2 U ^ $ + X B 7 N M 7 4 C Z 5 @ U 4 D / (Right)

The correct answer is

One

Such series questions test careful, position-by-position scanning. The required condition has two parts that must hold simultaneously for a number: it must be immediately preceded by a letter AND immediately followed by a symbol. So each number needs a letter on its left and a symbol on its right — a very specific sandwich. Counting is strictly left to right.

The series is: S R E S 2 U ^ $ + X B 7 N M 7 4 C Z 5 @ U 4 D. The numbers present are 2, 7, 7, 4, 5 and 4. Let us examine the neighbour of each:

  • 2 → left = S (letter) ✓, right = U (letter) ✗ — fails, right side is not a symbol.
  • 7 (after B) → left = B (letter) ✓, right = N (letter) ✗ — fails.
  • 7 (after M) → left = M (letter) ✓, right = 4 (number) ✗ — fails.
  • 4 (after that 7) → left = 7 (number) ✗ — fails immediately.
  • 5 → left = Z (letter) ✓, right = @ (symbol) ✓ — both conditions satisfied!
  • 4 (near the end) → left = U (letter) ✓, right = D (letter) ✗ — fails.

Only the number 5, sitting as "Z 5 @", has a letter before it and a symbol after it. Every other number fails at least one side. Therefore exactly one such number exists, so the answer is One. Answers like "Two" or "Three" come from wrongly relaxing the rule — for instance counting a number that has a letter on both sides, or ignoring that the follower must specifically be a symbol.
