Project Loon Initiative Explained

Project Loon was an experimental project initiated by Google (now Alphabet Inc.).

Goal: To provide affordable and reliable internet access to rural and remote areas worldwide.

Technology: It utilized a network of high-altitude, helium-filled balloons that floated in the stratosphere (around 20 km above the Earth).

• These balloons acted as mobile cell towers, beaming internet connectivity down to users on the ground.
• The balloons moved with the wind currents, and sophisticated algorithms were used to control their altitude and position them to create a stable network.

Originator: The project was initially developed by Google's X (formerly Google[x]) research and development division, eventually becoming a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. before being shut down in 2021.

Therefore, Google was the company behind Project Loon.
