A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow. This celestial event requires a specific alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

• The Setup: For Earth's shadow to fall on the Moon, the Earth must be positioned directly between the Sun and the Moon.
• Sun-Earth-Moon Alignment: This alignment looks like: Sun — Earth — Moon.
• Moon Phase Connection: This specific alignment only happens during the Full Moon phase. During a full moon, the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, as seen from Earth.

Why Other Moon Phases Don't Work

• New Moon: The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun (Sun — Moon — Earth). Earth cannot block the Sun's light from reaching the Moon.
• First/Third Quadrature: In these phases, the Sun, Earth, and Moon form roughly a right angle. This is not the straight-line alignment needed for an eclipse.
