Kolkata Port (now Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port) on the Hooghly River is the oldest operating port built by the British East India Company. It was developed from Job Charnock's 1690 settlement at Sutanati and formally commissioned as a port in 1870, and continues to operate today.
Madras (Chennai) and Bombay (Mumbai) ports were developed later as modern harbours, while Visakhapatnam Port opened only in 1933.
