Question

Match the compound to its respective mass ratio by elements from the table given below.

CompoundMass Ratio by Elements
1. Water (H2O)A. 1 : 8
2. Carbon dioxide (CO2)B. 14 : 3
3. Ammonia (NH3)C. 3 : 8
4. Sulphur dioxide (SO2)D. 1 : 1

RRB Group D 2025 Question Paper (18-Aug-2026) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

1 → A, 2 → C, 3 → B, 4 → D

The mass ratio of elements in a compound is obtained from the atomic masses multiplied by the number of atoms of each element in the formula unit.

Water (H2O): H : O = (2 × 1) : (1 × 16) = 2 : 16 = 1 : 8 → A.

Carbon dioxide (CO2): C : O = 12 : (2 × 16) = 12 : 32 = 3 : 8 → C.

Ammonia (NH3): N : H = 14 : (3 × 1) = 14 : 3 → B.

Sulphur dioxide (SO2): S : O = 32 : (2 × 16) = 32 : 32 = 1 : 1 → D.

Hence, the correct matching is 1 → A, 2 → C, 3 → B, 4 → D.
