Kranz anatomy and its significance

UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Kranz anatomy, a distinctive leaf structure found primarily in C4 plants, is a remarkable adaptation that underpins their high photosynthetic efficiency, especially in hot and arid environments. The term "Kranz" means "wreath" or "ring" in German, aptly describing its arrangement. In leaves exhibiting Kranz anatomy, vascular bundles are encircled by two prominent concentric rings of cells. The inner ring consists of large, thick-walled bundle sheath cells, which are rich in chloroplasts and have reduced intercellular spaces. These cells, in turn, are surrounded by a ring of mesophyll cells, also containing chloroplasts. This unique arrangement effectively separates the initial carbon fixation (occurring in mesophyll cells via PEP carboxylase) from the Calvin cycle (occurring in bundle sheath cells). Its significance lies in concentrating carbon dioxide around RuBisCO in the bundle sheath, thereby minimizing photorespiration and enhancing photosynthetic rates, allowing C4 plants like maize and sugarcane to thrive in conditions where C3 plants struggle.
