Atmospheric Layers: Temperature Trends
Understanding the temperature profile of Earth's atmospheric layers is key to identifying where temperature increases with altitude. The main layers are the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, and Thermosphere.
Stratosphere Temperature Profile
In the Stratosphere, temperature generally increases as altitude rises. This unique characteristic is due to the ozone layer ($O_3$) located within this region. The ozone layer effectively absorbs a significant portion of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation, converting this energy into heat.
Thermosphere Temperature Profile
The Thermosphere also exhibits a temperature profile where temperature increases with altitude. This layer directly absorbs high-energy solar radiation, such as X-rays and extreme UV radiation. The absorption of this intense energy heats the sparse gases in the thermosphere significantly.
Other Atmospheric Layers
- Troposphere: Temperature typically decreases with increasing altitude. This is the layer where most weather occurs.
- Mesosphere: Temperature again decreases with increasing altitude, reaching the coldest temperatures in the atmosphere.
