About the animal. The Gangetic dolphin was declared the National Aquatic Animal of India in 2009, and it is the State Aquatic Animal of Bihar. It is effectively blind, navigating and hunting entirely by echolocation in the silt-laden water, which is why it is locally called soons or susu after the sound of its breathing. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and placed in Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
Why Bihar. The state holds a large share of the surviving population, and the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary near Bhagalpur — notified in 1991 and stretching about 60 km from Sultanganj to Kahalgaon — is the country’s only sanctuary created specifically for the species. The threats are dams and barrages that fragment the river, entanglement in fishing nets, hunting for oil used as fish bait, and pollution. Placing the research centre at Patna puts it in the middle of the animal’s main surviving habitat.
