Non-point source pollution, in contrast, arises from diffuse and scattered sources spread across a wide area, such as agricultural runoff carrying fertilisers and pesticides or urban stormwater washing pollutants off roads and rooftops.

Because these diffuse sources cannot be traced to one single point, non-point source pollution is far harder to monitor and control than point source pollution.
