Question

In a sound wave traveling through air, which of the following terms refers to a region where the particles are crowded together, resulting in high pressure and high density?

The correct answer is

Compression

Sound is a longitudinal wave that travels through a medium as alternating compressions and rarefactions of the particles.

A compression is the region where the air particles are pushed close together, producing high pressure and high density, whereas a rarefaction is the region where particles are spread apart, giving low pressure and low density.

Wavelength is the distance between two consecutive compressions (or rarefactions), and a crest is a feature of transverse waves, not longitudinal sound waves.

Hence, the region of crowded particles with high pressure and high density is called Compression.
