The Geological Survey of India, set up in 1851 and headquartered in Kolkata, is the national geoscience organisation under the Ministry of Mines. It had never been headed by a woman in its 176-year history before 2026.
On 1 August 2026 Varsha Ashok Aglawe, a palaeontologist who joined GSI in 1992 and was Additional Director General and Head of the Eastern Region, took charge as the 54th Director General of GSI, succeeding Asit Saha. She thus became the first woman to lead the organisation.
