Question

Identify the statement(s) that accurately describe situations involving refraction.

(i) The apparent depth of a swimming pool is less than its actual depth due to refraction.

(ii) We are able to see our image in a plane mirror due to refraction.

(iii) A pencil partially dipped in water appears bent at the water surface due to refraction.

(iv) Refraction makes a white wall appear colored at night.

The correct answer is

Both (i) and (iii)

Refraction is the bending of light when it passes from one transparent medium into another, because light travels at different speeds in different media. Each statement is tested against this idea.

(i) is correct: light from the bottom of the pool bends away from the normal as it leaves water and enters air, so the bottom appears raised and the apparent depth is less than the real depth.

(ii) is incorrect: an image in a plane mirror is formed by reflection of light from the mirror surface, not by light passing into another medium.

(iii) is correct: light from the dipped part of the pencil bends at the water–air boundary, so that part appears raised and the pencil looks bent at the water surface.

(iv) is incorrect: a white wall reflects whatever light falls on it, so it looks coloured when coloured light falls on it; this is due to the light reaching it and to reflection, not refraction. So only (i) and (iii) describe refraction.

Hence, Both (i) and (iii).
