Question

Given that M : N = 5 : 4 & N : P = 4 : 7. If the difference between P and M is 11, find N.

The correct answer is

22

Make N common. Multiply first ratio by 1 and second by 1 so N = 4 in both.

M : N : P = 5 : 4 : 7, so let M = 5k, N = 4k, P = 7k.

P − M = 7k − 5k = 2k. Given this equals 11, so k = 5.5.

Therefore N = 4 × 5.5 = 22.

Hence, 22.
