F.W. Riggs, a notable scholar, proposed a model to understand societal structures in his work 'Prismatic Society Revisited'. He analyzed societies by looking at them through two main dimensions. These dimensions help us differentiate between various types of societies, especially those undergoing rapid change or modernization.

Understanding Riggs' Two Dimensions

According to Riggs, the two key dimensions used to characterize societies within his prismatic model are:

• Degree of Integration: This dimension looks at how connected and cohesive the different parts of a society are. It examines the extent to which social institutions and individuals function together smoothly.
• Degree of Differentiation: This dimension focuses on how specialized and distinct the various social structures and institutions are. A highly differentiated society has specialized roles and institutions (like separate political, economic, and religious bodies), whereas a less differentiated society might have overlapping functions.

Riggs used these two dimensions to map out different societal types. The 'prismatic' society specifically represents a state where structures are neither fully integrated (like in traditional societies) nor fully differentiated (like in modern societies), but exist in a transitional or overlapping state, much like light passing through a prism produces distinct colors from white light.
