98, 79, 62, 47, 33, 23, 14

The correct answer is

33

To find the intruder in a series, we list the differences between consecutive terms and look for a smooth, predictable pattern that exactly one term violates.

The terms are 98, 79, 62, 47, 33, 23, 14. Working from the start, the successive drops are \(98-79=19\), \(79-62=17\) and \(62-47=15\).

These decreases, 19, 17, 15, form their own tidy pattern: each is 2 less than the one before, so the next expected drop should be \(15-2=13\).

Applying a drop of 13 to the term 47, the following term ought to be \(47-13=34\). The series, however, prints 33, which is one short of the required value.

To confirm 33 is the culprit and not a later term, continue the intended drops of 11 and then 9 from the corrected 34: \(34-11=23\) and \(23-9=14\), both of which agree with the remaining printed terms.

So the single break in the otherwise regular pattern is the entry written as 33 where 34 was expected.

Therefore the wrong number in the series is 33.
