Endemism

UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Endemism refers to the ecological state of a species, genus, or other taxon being unique and restricted to a defined geographic location, such as an island, a mountain range, a country, or even a specific habitat type. These species are not found naturally anywhere else in the world. Endemism often arises due to geographical isolation, specialized habitat requirements, or a unique evolutionary history within that particular region. Islands, for instance, are well-known hotspots for endemic species because their isolation promotes independent evolutionary pathways. While endemism contributes significantly to unique biodiversity, it also renders species highly vulnerable to habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species, as their limited distribution offers no alternative refuge. Consequently, areas with high endemism are often designated as biodiversity hotspots, demanding focused conservation strategies to protect these irreplaceable biological treasures.
